AN ADOLESCENT video game session took a tragic turn when a 13-year-old boy was virtually killed and agreed to choke himself in real life as part of a ritual agreed with his friends.
Gustavo Detter was playing the battle game at home remotely with his friends. The group were communicating with one another via webcams and routinely choked themselves with coiled wire as a daft joke to mark a virtual loss in the game.
When he lost the teenager from Sao Vicente in Brazil took the idea too seriously and ended up fainting. His alarmed friends watching it happen through their webcams called Gustavo’s home and his cousin rushed to help him.
An ambulance was called but unfortunately the youngster died the following day from his injuries. A police investigation has been launched and the case has induced serious scrutiny of the video gaming world.
