Man sentenced for attacking couple speaking Spanish in UK

SC

SPANIARD Tomas Gil and his girlfriend were speaking in their native tongue when they were overheard by Daniel Way, who screamed at them, “F***ing Spanish, speak English,” before ripping a piece of wood from a nearby fence and hitting Mr Gil in the face with it.

The incident occurred during the early hours of the morning of May 19, while the couple were returning home from a night out. Mr Way had been drinking heavily on the night of the crime and reportedly ‘smirked’ during an interview with police when shown pictures of the injuries sustained by Mr Gil.

The incident was caught on CCTV and on October 7, despite pleading to the court that he wasn’t racist, Mr Way was sentenced to 12 months in prison suspended for 15 months, as well as having to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, take part in 25 rehabilitation activity days and pay the victim £800 (€900).

After sentencing Mr Way collapsed outside the courts and had to be treated at the scene for shock by paramedics before returning home.
