Big wheel to keep on turning in Malaga

FERRIS WHEEL: Has been out of service since August 23.

MALAGA CITY’S ferris wheel will live to see another day… or more accurately, another year.

The administrative board of the Port Authority of Malaga has officially approved a new licence for the wheel, which will thus remain in the space it now occupies, behind the Muelle Heredia bus station.

The licence conceded to the wheel is similar to the previous one, and will allow the attraction to stay in place for another year. Towards the end of this period, Mederyt, the promotional company which manages the wheel, will have the opportunity to apply to have the licence extended by another six months.

At the present moment, the ferris wheel has been out of service since August 23 due to the expiration of the previous one year licence.

The announcement did not come without controversy. Although the ferris wheel has become a popular attraction in Malaga City, some residents would prefer for it to roll right on out of town. These disgruntled citizens, who are mainly people living in the vicinity of the wheel, claim that it is a nuisance and an eyesore.

“Hundreds of strangers pass in front of our homes recording videos or taking photos,” they complained. They added that they have to constantly keep the blinds down and windows shut to block out the incessant noise.
