Masterclass held for budding chefs

CHEF MASTERCLASS: Antonio Carmona visited Los Cuatro Caños primary school.

FOURTH year pupils at Vera’s Los Cuatro Caños primary school in Vera were treated to a masterclass by chef Antonio Carmona to honour the Dia del Gusto (Day of Taste).

The chef is a spokesman for Almeria Province for Eurotoques, an association which aims to share knowledge on local produce and cuisine all over Europe, and took the day off work to cook with the children.

“I told them how to distinguish different flavours and, especially, to use their senses: taste, sight, hearing, smell and touch, to help them evaluate a healthy meal, the Mediterranean diet and encourage them from an early age to follow a healthy diet for a healthy life,” the chef explained.

Carmona prepared a breakfast for the youngsters which included bread with ham and tomato, olive oil, orange juice and a homemade sponge cake to show them alternatives to packaged biscuits and buns.

“I had worked with other schools before and am very happy to see the children enjoying themselves,” the chef said.

Headmistress Marita Perez Redondo expressed her pleasure at the initiative, which she said she hopes will be repeated in future years. “It was great to see the pupils enjoying themselves as children ought to and we all learned a lot,” she said.
