EUROPEAN ARREST WARRANT: The suspect is led away by Alicante police.

A RETIRED British schoolteacher has been arrested by the National Police in Pego, Alicante, three decades after he is alleged to have sexually assaulted two of his students who were 13 and 16 years old at the time

The 74-year-old suspect was detained under a European Arrest Warrant after Alicante police were tipped off that he may be residing in the coastal town.

A team of investigators moved in and nabbed the unnamed man following a short period of surveillance of his home in the Monte Pego urbanisation.

The detainee is accused of ‘several’ charges of sexually abusing a minor in the 1980s, when he was a teacher at a school in Maidenhead, Berkshire, and faces a maximum sentence of more than 40 years behind bars if found guilty.

The European Arrest Warrant was issued by UK authorities after it emerged that he abused two underage girls, with those involving the younger victim allegedly committed in his office at the school.

The parents of the elder were personal friends of the accused, and he is said to have abused their trust by molesting their daughter at their family home, with reports suggesting that he jumped into bed with her while she slept before assaulting her.

The suspect has been transferred to Alicante’s provincial police headquarters, where he spent a night in the cells before being placed at the disposal of the National Court in Madrid, with extradition proceedings apparently underway.
