GATHERING STEAM: To get the Sierras recognised as a national park.
ATTEMPTS to get the Sierra de las Nieves and Sierra Bermeja recognised as a National Park are gathering steam.
Meetings have been held between the various municipalities involved at the Congress Hall of Estepona with all unanimously agreeing on the plans. They signed a joint document that will be sent to the various administrations and agencies, to get the areas the protection that comes as being classed as a National Park.
At the meeting it was agreed a monitoring committee be appointed for what is called the ‘Bermeja + Nieves’ project. This will include a technical representative from each municipality with the team working to promote the project and getting the motion passed.
The difficulty lies in that the Sierra de las Nieves has already started the paperwork to be recognised as a National Park. Under this new agreement they will request this work be stopped with the application modified to include Sierra Bermeja with both parks making a joint application asking to be recognised.
