OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil have arrested 21 people in connection with cultivation and illegal sale of marihuana in the Costa del Sol.
As the investigation developed so it became apparent that this was part of an international criminal gang and of those arrested, individuals were of British, French, Iranian and Spanish nationalities with establishments in Estepona, Marbella and Mijas.
The gang was responsible for at least three plantations where cannabis was grown, all of which were well hidden and had high security to protect them but officers managed to raid these premises plus five others where they discovered a large amount of cash and a number of weapons.
In the end, the overall operation seized €69,857, £7,855, five pistols, two revolvers, one shotgun as well as 1,250 cannabis plants, 191 grams of cocaine, 1,000 anabolic steroids, gold bullion and 17 expensive vehicles.
One of the individuals had been hiding in the United Kingdom but was arrested as he flew into Spain and those involved will be charged with being members of a criminal organisation, drug trafficking, possession of illegal firearms, carrying false identification and theft of electricity.
