DONALD Trump has been sworn in as the 45th President of the United States.
The 70-year-old billionaire businessman took the oath of office at the inauguration ceremony in Washington DC.
Trump, who is said to have a personal fortune of more than $3.5 billion, pledged to unify his country and make it great “for all of our people” at a speech on Thursday night.
A massive security operation was put in place for the ceremony which was boycotted by more than 50 Democrat politicians.
Hundreds of thousands of supporters converged on the city but protesters were also expected to make their presence felt during the proceedings.
After his speech the President was due to lead a parade along Pennsylvania Avenue which will end at the White House.
The man appointed to be his vice-president, Indiana governor Mike Pence, was sworn in by Justice Thomas, of the US Supreme Court.

Less widely reported is the fact the new First Lady, Trump’s third wife Melania, has declared she will not be living with her husband in the White House. This has prompted speculation about the state of their marriage of course, given the lurid nature of many allegations against the US president.
The official reason for her absence is that she is staying on at Trump Tower in New York to look after their son Barron until he has finished school. No doubt she will be by his side on many official occasions, as she was during the inauguration, but it is extremely rare for a First Lady to be living separately from the president. In the entire history of the US only two of her predecessors have not lived in theÃÂ White House – Martha Washington, because theÃÂ White House had not yet been built – and Anna Harrison because the president died after only a month in office while she was still in the process of moving in! So this is a first. Even HillaryÃÂ Clinton, as we all know, stayed on by her husband’s side in the WhiteÃÂ House after the Monica Lewinski affair. With that in mind, perhaps we can draw our own conclusions about Melania’s notable absence.
What a pity Hillary didn’t get the presidency though. It would have been great fun watching how Bill performed as the new First Lady!
