Robert Tonner with the Jazz dolls
THE Tonner Doll Company believes that it has created the world’s first transgender doll – in the image of transgender icon, teenager Jazz Jennings – which it unveiled at the recent New York Toy Fair.
Jazz was born a boy but at a very early age declared that she was a girl and has been living as a transgender female since the age of five and is seen as role model for transgendered people throughout the USA.
Now at the age of 16, Jazz has her own reality TV show, has written her autobiography and makes regular appearances promoting LGBT matters.
The doll will go on sale in the summer and is likely to be snapped up as a collector piece quickly attracting a customer base from a very wide audience.
“She really is so cute, and we are truly proud to bring her to doll-form, quite an empowering piece I have to say, reading and being where interviews take place, watching everyone come in and their very special and truly personal way of discussing Jazz and their specific relationship to her too” said a spokesman for the company.
Jazz commenting on Instagram explained “For those asking: the doll is considered to be the first ‘transgender’ doll because it’s based on an individual who is trans. Of course it is still just a regular girl doll because that’s exactly what I am: a regular girl!”
