Outbreak of bird flu discovered in Catalonia

A CONTAGIOUS outbreak of bird flu which has caused problems throughout Europe has found its way to Spain and will result in the culling of thousands of ducks and possibly other poultry.

Evidence of the deadly H5N8 virus was identified on a farm neat Girona in Catalonia and ducks there will have to be slaughtered in order to try to check the spread of the virus and a further nine farms in the immediate area are currently being watched for signs of the flu.

Whilst it is devastating news for the farmers, the only piece of positive news is that the virus is not transmittable to humans.
