Heat alerts hit Spain nine days before summer

SIX PROVINCES have issued orange alerts as temperatures around inland peninsulas surge to above 35 degrees.

Masses of warm air swept across the Iberian Peninsula last Saturday, giving way to a prolonged episode of blazing temperatures, normally only seen during high summer. According to State Weather Department, AEMET, temperatures will continue to rise for the rest of the week, with some areas reaching 40 degrees.

Ruben Del Campo, spokesman for AEMET said: “At the moment, there have been no record values, although we are facing unnatural temperatures for this time of year. A historical record may be broken throughout the week, in both maximum and minimum thresholds.”

The provinces of Cordoba, Jaen, Seville, Toledo, Badajoz and Caceres have issued the alerts and are expected to keep then in place until next week.

It has been predicted that temperatures will settle around 22 degrees during the evening, leading to hot sticky nights.
