SPAIN’S Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis, has dismissed claims that the Moncloa would block Brexit agreements over possible disagreements about Gibraltar.

He added that discussions over the Rock would be on a bilateral basis between the UK and Spain.

“It doesn’t depend only on us, it depends on the UK and whether an agreement can be reached,” Dastis told news outlets during a press conference.

“The most important thing is, and we hope the UK can see it too, is that there is a constructive relationship between the UK and the EU,” he added.

“The issue of Gibraltar doesn’t have to be the first, nor the most important point during talks.”

Spain has however requested that any Brexit terms which apply to Gibraltar must be separately discussed between Britain and Spain.

Although Gibraltar voted overwhelming in favour of remaining in the EU, the consensus is that they are determined to remain British.
