Alejandro Valverde after undergoing surgery on his knee
MOVISTAR’S Alejandro Valverde undergoes emergency surgery after a horror crash in the Tour de France.
The Spaniard skidded into a safety barrier after losing control of his bicycle on a wet corner in Dusseldorf.
Valverde confirmed on social media that he suffered a break to his kneecap but the operation was successful.
Elsewhere, Geraint Thomas claimed the Stage 1 yellow jersey despite crashing early on alongside Sky teammate Chris Froome.
