The junction where the new roundabout is being built
POLICE are probing a road accident in which a Costa del Sol councillor allegedly collided and injured a moped rider while driving around a closed roundabout.
The accident on Avenida Antonio Machado in Benalmadena involved the town’s Personnel councillor, Beatriz Olmedo, who witnesses say used the new roundabout despite it being closed to traffic.
They say she collided with a man on a moped, with the rider taken to hospital with a gashed leg that needed several stitches.
A large sign reportedly expressly forbade use of the roundabout.
Councillor Olmedo has declined to comment until the investigation is complete.
Secrecy of the subsequent police proceedings – described as being conducted in a “cloak and dagger style” – have been criticised by local Spanish media.
However, Local Police Chief Francisco Zamora has said investigations have been “professional.” Ms Olmedo hit the headlines in 2015 after being axed from the Cuidadanos political party over a supposed undercover pact with counterparts on the PSOEled council weeks before being handed an official position as an independent candidate.
