WAYNE ROONEY has shocked England by announcing his retirement from international football.
The former Three Lions captain rejected a recall from Gareth Southgate and told news outlets:
“It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad.
“However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football.”
The 31-year-old is England’s most capped outfield player having appeared 119 times and is the country’s all-time top goalscorer with 53.
