Game of Thrones fans clog historic stairway in northern Spain

DRAGONSTONE has been flooded with tourists.

The small island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe off the northern coast of Spain has seen 75,000 visits in July alone, a 22 per cent increase on July last year, after Game of Thrones fans made their pilgrimage to the location.

Hopeful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Daenerys Targaryen, traversed the stairway (which served as the pathway to Dragonstone) in season seven of the hit show, accompanied by her three dragons and now devoted fans want to follow in her footsteps.

Home to an ancient Catholic monastery, the usually-smooth-flowing 241-step stairway has been clogged to the point that the Bermeo Tourism Office and the Environment Department are considering charging for the attraction, which is currently completely free or limiting numbers in order to preserve the historic monument.
