FALLING MASONRY: Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence

A SPANISH tourist has been killed after he was hit by falling masonry as he visited the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence with his wife.

The 52-year-old man was struck by a chunk of  decorative stone about siix inches square that fell from a height of 65ft.

The 15th-century church – where Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli are buried is  a top tourist attraction and has been undergoing a maintenance programme.

It is expected to remain closed to visitors while the integrity of the remaider of the building is checked.
