A ROCKFALL and landslide onto a railway track in southern Spain today led to the closure of the line while teams worked to clear the debris.
The popular, scenic single-track route from Algeciras, on the coast, to Ronda that follows the Guadiaro Valley was blocked near the village of Jimera de Libar.
One train the hit the landslide and engineers from railway company Renfe were sent to evaluate the damage to the train while technicians from infrastructure, Adif, worked to the clear the obstruction.
The landslide happened on the stretch of track between Benaojan-Montejaque and Jimera de Libar stations alongside on the well-known ‘Walk of Mr Henderson’s railway’ route that was famously trekked by former UK prime minister David Cameron some years ago.
Workers are still clearing the reinforced mesh and mud that was dislodged by several days of heavy rain but by the afternoon a reduced service was reinstated.
