Man stabs his wife to death in Spain, ‘for being a woman’

A MAN who killed his wife by stabbing her 11 times has been jailed for 24 years.
An Alicante court heard how the man had grabbed a kitchen knife, followed his victim to the bedroom, shut the door to ensure she had nowhere to run to, then attacked her aiming stabs at her vital organs. The attack was so vicious that a post-mortem examination revealed nearly every one of the stabs would have proven fatal.
Prosecutors said she was killed simply “for the fact of being a woman”, as she planned to live an independent life having found work in a hotel and was due to pick up a training certificate.
A jury decided that the man – who has been left quadriplegic after a self inflicted injury to his spinal cord suffered the same day of the killing – was guilty of ‘malicious murder’.
The panel had heard how the convicted man was with his wife in their Benidorm home when he decided to end his wife’s life after a ‘discussion’.
The victim’s daughter told the court how the man had psychologically abused both herself and her mother over a long period of time, testimony that was backed up by psychologists who had been treating the victim for some time.
The murdered woman had filed several complaints of psychological abuse but then withdrawn them for fear of being left destitute as she depended on him financially.
During sentencing the judge also imposed a compensation order of €150,000 for the woman’s daughter and €50,000 for her son, who had left home years previously and now lives in Argentina.
