THE hunt for a serial arsonist has stepped up after a further seven large waste containers were set alight in Palma in two nights.
So far this year, 267 bins have been torched, with the damage caused exceeding half a million euros. And the National Police has ‘activated a special device’ to try to catch the culprit.
The first in the latest spate of attacks took place on Sunday afternoon when four bins were targeted in Darwin Street near Coll d’en Rabassa.
And the following night, three containers were set ablaze in the Torrent dels Jueus area, between Palma and Llucmajor.
A further fire destroyed council property in Calle Indalecio Prieto in Son Gotleu on Tuesday afternoon, though it may have been an accident.
A Palma fire service spokesman said the fires were extinguished within half an hour and investigations show an accelerating substance is being used. Police confirmed they believe one person with knowledge of the area is responsible, though alternatives are not being ruled out.
