NIJAR, in Almeria province has joined the prestigious Prettiest Villages in Spain association.
The association’s governing body revealed Nijar has been accepted from among a long list of applications as one of the 11 new members at a meeting in Salamanca last Saturday. There are now three provincial locations in the select club: Mojacar and Lucainena de las Torres are already members.
The association says it includes on its prettiest village list “places of great beauty which reveal history and culture, villages where tradition surrounds visitors, who on mixing with locals become part of this brand, although only for an instant.”
Association President Francisco Mestre said the 11 new members had every reason to be proud of becoming part of the prettiest village network, but stressed membership is an ongoing responsibility.
“They have committed to maintaining and improving every day their architectural beauty, their cultural heritage, their traditions and their natural surroundings”, Mestre commented.
Villages seeking membership have to meet a list of 40 minimum criteria, which include cleanliness, the preservation of building façades, traffic circulation, parking, park and garden maintenance and policies on publicity posters.
The 11 new association members put the total number of villages with the prettiest in Spain recognition at 79.
