THE Civil Guard has warned of the rise of use of a method that criminals have been using to defraud citizens in Spain. The method involves placing a fake keyboard on top of the real keyboard of a cash machine. When trying to withdraw cash in one of these manipulated cash machines with a fake keyboard, the money fails to appear and the fake keyboard will register the pin code of the inserted card. The Guardia Civil recommends that: “If your banking operation is correct but the cashier does not give you the money, do not go,”. Those who fear falling victim to this scam should first check that the slot is not covered. Secondly, be careful with people who voluntarily offer to ‘help’ at the cash machine and contact the bank in question to ensure that the transaction has been recorded or not and the incident reported.
