A FARMER who shot dead a German shepherd which had reportedly attacked his sheep, killing one of them, faces charges of ‘animal abuse resulting in death’ in Sencelles, Mallorca (Spain).
The dog was one of two which had escaped from a nearby property.
The owner apparently heard shots and minutes later only one of the animals returned to the house.
However, the farmer went to Inca police station to report the slaying of some of cattle, but denied shooting the dog.
An investigation was launched and officers visited the defendant’s farm where they found a ‘recent grave’, which on examination, contained the corpses of a sheep and a German shepherd.
A chip in the dog’s neck confirmed it was the missing animal and an autopsy revealed the cause of death had been a shot with a firearm.
A date for the abuse hearing is to be set.
