HUMAN SMUGGLER: Spanish activist caught after attempting to smuggle a 17-year-old refuge into Europe

AN Athens court sentenced Spanish activist and unionist Lola Gutierrez to a 17-month suspended prison sentence.
Gutierrez was arrested in 2016 while attempting to smuggle a 17-year-old Kurdish refuge out of Greece so that he could be reunited with his family in northern Europe.
The couple, travelling as mother and son, were detained as they boarded an aircraft, and Gutierrez was held in a Greek internment camp.
Several days later she was deported to Spain as a danger to national security and barred from entering the country until 2023.
Although the Greek public prosecutor recommended a sentence of up to 10 years for forgery and people smuggling, the court took into account Gutierrez’s admission of guilt and her request that the offence’s “humanitarian nature” were taken into account.
