Worldwide manhunt ends after fugitive is arrested in Spain

FORMER owner of one of Chicago’s top restaurants, Attila Gyulai, has been arrested in Spain following a worldwide manhunt.

Ten months on the run due to a wire fraud scandal came to an end when Gyulai was finally handcuffed at a private home in Valencia, having travelled from Ecuador.

The fugitive’s former restaurant, Embeya, opened in 2012 to rave reviews. But in 2016, Gyulai and his wife reportedly shut it down out of the blue, abandoned their car, and fled the country.

According to reports, a judge ruled that same year that Gyulai deceived his former restaurant partners, Thai and Danielle Dang, and left them with more than €1 million in loan debts.

A year later, the FBI issued a warrant for his arrest and he has been on the run since.

The process of extraditing Gyulai to the US from Spain could take some time, and no court dates had been set at the time of going to press.
