HUERCAL-OVERA Mayor Domingo Fernandez and Sports Councillor Alonso Mena have been overseeing the delivery of new sports equipment for keep fit classes for the elderly held in various locations around the municipality. Around 600 elderly residents in all attend the classes given by two specialist instructors. The Mayor described the classes as having the atmosphere of “a big family, where they enjoy sport and an active life.” Fernandez said his government team is “very proud of all of them as every day they give us a life lesson and send us the message that getting older is not at odds with being active and continuing to enjoy yourself.” The Mayor explained that the choice of equipment supplied by the local council was a response to the requests from the instructors as to the materials they needed, and includes weights, balls, bands and fitness balls. Huercal-Overa council is currently working with the University of Almeria on a study with the elderly taking part in the ‘Activate’ sports programme, which is focusing on the benefits of sport in the battle against Alzheimer’s.
