Ten years for 64-year-old who killed husband for ‘having Alzheimer’s’ on the Costa Blanca

THE 64-year-old woman who killed her husband, aged 73, because, the court heard, he was suffering from Alzheimer’s, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The trial at the Provincial Court of Alicante had to be held for a second time after the first jury rejected the agreement made to reduce the 17-year sentence requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to just nine years on the grounds of mental illness.

The defence lawyer stated that the woman had killed her husband in an act of desperation after years of looking after family members that were dependent on her, all of which caused her to enter into deep depression.

The woman claimed that her husband no longer recognised her and that after killing him, she would have committed suicide herself so as not to be a burden on their two children, who both defended their mother throughout the whole trial.
