The flight from London Heathrow to Gibraltar was diverted to Malaga-Costa del Sol airport in Spain after being hit by strong winds on approach to the Rock.
Yesterday’s frightening video (below) of the approach and aborted landing of BA492 immediately went viral on social media.
Gibraltar Airport is often wrongly described as one of the most dangerous airports in the world. It is unusual, though, as the runway is dissected by a road that is closed as aircraft land and take off.
If aircraft encounter low visibility or crosswinds on the approach they are routinely diverted to Malaga Airport and passengers are transferred to Gibraltar Airport by coach.
