A FRENCH tourist died after being hit by a train at the Valencian resort of Cullera while holidaying with family in the area.
The accident happened just before 9pm on Sunday evening.
According to sources, it had rained heavily throughout the day and into the evening and it is believed that the surface at the station may have been slippery.
At the time of the incident, it was still raining and there was a lack of light on the station.
Sources have revealed that the group of tourists may have become disorientated and walked in the wrong direction away from the exit.
Witnesses told Spanish press that the 75-year-old victim had slipped and fallen off of the platform into the path of an incoming train which was heading towards Gandia.
Attempts to revive the woman at the scene were unsuccessful and she died shortly afterwards.
An investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the pensioner’s death by the Guardia Civil.
