ONE of the last Spanish survivors of the Nazi concentration camps has died at the age of 103.
Neus Catala passed away on Saturday in her home town of Els Guiamets in Tarragona.
“Today the anti-Fascist and internationalist fighter Neus Catala left us. In these dark times in which we are living, let her memory serve as an example”, Els Guiamets Council posted on Twitter.
Born in October 2015, the committed republican and feminist was a nurse during the Spanish Civil War and helped 180 children in her care escape to France. She later joined the French resistance, but was reported to the Nazis and deported to Ravensbrück and later to a Czech camp. She was liberated in May 1945.
To mark her 100th birthday the Catalan government declared 2015 Neus Catala Year in recognition of her life dedicated to defending human rights.
