GRAVE DISCOVERY: Elche’s central market. Credit: Ayuntamiento de Elche.
A DIG under Elche’s (Alicante) central market has made a grim discovery – 120 skeletons that date back to the Islamic period in the city’s history.
The human remains have been dated back to between the 11th and 13th centuries, and in a poignant insight into the realities of life and death in those times 60 per cent are of children under 12 years of age.
The discovery was made during the third phase of an archaeological investigation of the area. Elche’s Councillor for Urbanism, José Manuel Sánchez explained that a fourth phase of excavations is planned to take in the ruins of the Arab baths extending into the Central Market building.
