CANCER TREATMENTS: Oncologist takes part in a cancer study. Photo: @CIMA_unav
A SPANISH oncologist has taken part in a study into the most effective and least toxic cancer treatments.
Elisabeth Perez, a specialist in Medical Oncology from the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella, has worked with researchers from CIMA and the University Clinic of Navarra to trial treatments which are less harmful.
Their strategy sees them blocking a protein used to regulate the immune system before using the most advanced immunotherapy treatments. Their work was published in Nature, one of the world’s most respected scientific journals.
The treatment has so far only been tested on animals. A member of the team said: “If these results are duplicated in patients, it will change the paradigm of the therapeutic approach to cancer.”
