TRADEGY: British boy dies after falling into the pool of his grandfather

A BRITISH boy aged five has died after falling into a swimming pool in southern Spain.

The tragedy happened at the beauty spot of lake La Viñuela, inland from the Costa del Sol at about 10am today (June 20).

Unconfirmed reports indicate the victim was on a family holiday at a house belonging to his grandfather in the Axarquia region of Malaga province.

Emergency services responded to a 112 call in which it was explained the youngster had fallen into the pool and was now unresponsive.

Local Police were first onto the scene and requested immediate medical help as the boy was unconscious, according to Andalucia’s emergency service.

An ambulance as well as a health service helicopter attended the scene in calle Las Coberteras, but medics were unable to revive the child.

A Guardia Civil spokesman confirmed that a boy had died. He also corrected earlier reports that said the boy was aged four.

It has been a week of tragedy in Spanish swimming pools. In the past few days a child of three drowned in Galicia and a 14-year-old boy died in Catalonia in pool accidents.

In Madrid a two-year-old boy is critically ill after an accident in an inflatable swimming pool. His family managed to revive him after following telephone instructions from the 112 emergency services operator.

A five-year-old girl recently drowned when she was swept out to sea on an inflatable off the Catalonia coast.
