THREE tourists in the Mallorcan district of Calvia have been fined for balconing, so far this year.
Local laws mean people recklessly jumping from balconies into pools or clambering from one balcony to another face fines of between €600 and €1,500.
Anyone encouraging or inciting others to indulge in this reckless behaviour is also liable to be fined.
The bylaw was introduced in 2016 after a string of balconing deaths and serious injuries. Last year 11 fines were handed out in Calvia, which is the council that covers Magaluf.
All the fines so far this year were levied by Local Police in June.
So far in 2019 there has been one death attributed to balconing.
A British tourist was also filmed leaping from an exterior stair to try and grab a tree. He fell through it and crashed to the ground, breaking several bones in the process.
He allegedly then claimed he had slipped by the pool in an effort to get the hotel to pay his medical expenses. The hotel’s insurance company discovered the video on social media and is refusing to pay, leaving the tourist facing a bill of €37,000.
