FIRES which broke out in the Cala Hills and the Las Lagunas area of Mijas earlier this afternoon have been stabilised, the Infoca firefighting service reported.

Teams from the Mijas and Fuengirola fire brigades and the Infoca firefighting service, along with local police and Guardia Civil, managed to get the situations under control. Two helicopters were also brought in to help douse the flames.

The fire in the River Gomenaro river area, close to Mijas Golf and an industrial estate, produced a plume of black smoke visible from some distance.

The Mijas fire service cautioned there remained a risk of fires in the region to the high temperatures and asked the public to call 112 in the event of further outbreaks.
