TRAGEDY struck at Punta Prima beach last night when a 20-year-old Briton fell to his death while taking a “selfie”. The as yet unnamed man was with two friends in the Orihuela Costa resort, and plunged over 20 feet to his death off the edge of the promenade, landing on the concrete walkway below.

Although the Guardia Civil have yet to confirm, it is understood that they were attempting to take pictures of themselves and the view behind. Despite attempts by the SAMU to revive the man, he died at the scene whilst the other friend that fell was airlifted to hospital by helicopter. It is unclear to what extent the surviving man is injured, but local health authorities and the Civil Guard have returned to the scene to ascertain if it is considered a risk.

The accident happened at roughly 7.30pm when the promenade was busy with hundreds of other people walking and enjoying the evening sun. Dozens rushed to the scene, with shock and sadness already seeping through the local community, especially British expatriates.
