FLAGGED: Beaches shut as a precaution. Credit: Ayuntamiento de Palma.
THE beaches of Can Pere Antoni and Ciudad Jardin in Palma (Mallorca) remain closed to bathing today (Tuesday, July 9) after heavy rainfall overwhelmed the local sewage pumping station. Palma council has closed the beaches as a precaution until analysis shows the seawater is safe to swim in. Red flags were first raised yesterday afternoon to comply with an agreement reached between local neighbourhood associations and the councils. They agreed that after heavy rain precautions should be taken as sewages ends up being discharged straight into the sea untreated.
