Severe rise in sexual assaults committed by multiple attackers in Spain

SINCE 2016 there has been an increase in the amount of group sexual assaults across Spain, according to a project ‘Geoviolencia sexual’ which is promoted by Feminicidio.net.

In 2016 Spain was stunned by a gang rape trial in Pamplona, where judges convicted 5 defendants guilty of sexual abuse but not of sexual assault. In this year 10.6 million international tourists visited Andalusia. This figure was 30% up on the 15 year average since 2000.

2016 was the year a large percentage of these violations occurred in Andalusia where one out of every four assaults were perpetrated. 17.3 per cent were in Valencia and 14.4 per cent in Catalonia.

Since then, figures show there have been more than 100 “herd” violations during the last three years in Spain alone.

This rise in these types of sexual assaults has been documented closely over the last few years. There were 17 in 2016, 14 in 2017, 59 in 2018 and 14 in the first three months of 2019.

Within the 104 cases that were registered, it is believed that there were 356 aggressors involved.

One specific case involved a 14-year-old. This case was a multiple rape in Manresa, Barcelona where seven young people allegedly sexually abused the teenager in a factory. She testified in court in Barcelona on Monday.

One in three victims in the 104 cases recorded were minors.
