THE former world number one Simona Halep has beaten Serena Williams to claim the Wimbledon title.
She beat the 23-time Grand Slam champion 6-2, 6-2 to win her second Slam title in straight sets.
This was Halep’s first final at SW19, and she now had another slam trophy to sit alongside the one she won last year at the French Open.
It took her just 55 minutes to beat Williams in a dominating display. In 10 previous meetings Halep had triumphed just once.
Halep now looks likely to return to the Top 4 on the WTA rankings, having dropped to No.8 after Roland Garros.
