THE Costa del Sol town of Mijas has launched its annual sun safety campaign for this year.

This year’s campaign from Mijas Council focuses on promoting protection against ultraviolet (UV) light.

Information about how to read the UV scale, which shows where the light is at its strongest in a given place, is set to be given out to locals and tourists.

Magdelena de Troya, of Dermatology Unit at Marbella’s Costa del Hospital and director of the campaign, said all possible measures against UV light should be taken this summer.

“Avoid going to the beach when the sun is at its hottest, or if you do take a parasol, wear clothes, put on suncream, a hat and glasses while sunbathing,” de Troya said.

Overexposure to UV is the biggest preventable cause of skin cancer, with at least half of all cases resulting from it according to Mijas Council.
