A US Marine accused of two vehicle thefts has been arrested after he knocked a Guardia Civil officer off his motorbike, leaving the victim seriously hurt with multiple injuries.

The arrested man is stationed at the US military base in Rota (Cadiz). It was from there that he allegedly stole a high-end car on June 17. He is said to have gone on a joy ride, causing two accidents in the process, before abandoning the car in the middle of the road. A military ID card was found in the vehicle.

A day later he allegedly attempted to steal another car and then he took a van he found in Chipiona.

When he was driving this van on the A-2078 road in Rota, he caught the attention of police when he made an illegal manoeuvre. He then allegedly ran over the police motorcyclist in a hit and run.

The 33-year-old US sailor was arrested on June 21 for the first of the thefts, then arrested a second time on July 18 for the second series of incidents.

He has now been accused of attempted theft, crimes against road safety, abandonment of vehicle and failure to comply with his duty of care.
