Spain’s Turtle Dove population nears extinction

The European Union Wildlife Commission has stepped in to urge the Spain, along with France, to take the necessary measures to help protect the now endangered species.

According to statistics by The European Commission, Turtledove numbers have fallen by at least 40 per cent in the past 20 years. Despite these figures, Spain is home to more than 50 per cent of Europe’s breeding population.

Wildlife experts attribute the fall in numbers to increased pressures from agriculture and hunting leading to the destruction of their habitat.

According to European directives, EU member states must ensure that, they have “sufficient area of habitats, and that these habitats are protected with adequate legal guarantees and managed in accordance with the ecological imperatives of the species.

”The commission has warned Spanish authorities that” Since Spain has not taken the necessary measures to improve their protection, the Commission sends them two letters of formal notice,”If the current warnings are not actioned then Spain will appear before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
