A statue of the first Spanish winner of the Tour de France, Federico Martín Bahamontes has been vandalised.
The statue is located on Paseo de El Miraderoin Toledo and represents Bahamontes’ victory back in 1959.
The incident was reported on Tuesday morning by a local shop owner who noticed that one of the wheels on the 1.9 metre high bronze statue was lying on the floor and some parts were broken off.
The Municipal Police of Toledo are investigating the crime and a fire engine was sent to remove the remaining parts of the statue due to their weight.
The statue was inaugurated in May last year with Bahamontes in attendance along with fellow cyclists Miguel Induráin, Perico Delgado and Carlos Sastre.
