Benidorm killer free after 12 years in Spanish prison

Paul Durant, the 60-year-old man dubbed the “Costa Cannibal” has been released from prison and started a new life in a suburb of East London.

Paul was convicted in 2007 for the brutal murder of 41-year-old Karen Durrell in 2004 in Calpe, Benidorm.

Police broke into Ms Durrell’s flat after a series of missing person reports and found blood, a knife and traces of flesh but no body.

In a confession sent to a British newspaper in 2004 he claimed he killed Ms Durrell with a mallet, cut off and ate parts of her then disposed of what was left of her body in rubbish bags around Calpe.

Durant spent 12 years in prison in Spain when he was transferred back to the UK to see out his sentence. He was later convicted for the original robbery charges and a further eight years were added onto his time.

Freed last month, he was recently spotted going about his daily business in Tower Hamlets, East London where he is currently staying in a small flat in the area.
