A COLLAPSING building brought traffic to a standstill in Palma Quay.
The old building of the Port Authority, located on the Palma quay, suffered a partial collapse on Monday morning.
The building is completely empty inside due to the renovation works that are being carried out and only the façade remains. One of the buildings ledges has given way and fortunately, nobody was injured.
A total of 40 m of the ledge of the south façade and 15 metres of the east façade collapsed with the debris falling to the ground although it only caused minor material damage.
Firefighters arrived at the building to assess the situation and determined that the structure of the building was safe. Two lanes of traffic were closed which caused substantial traffic jams in the area. Work is now being carried out to remove the rubble, ensure that the rest of the building is stable and then continue the remodelling work.
