All out strike at Almeria greenhouses finally ended

The jubilant workers will now return to work Credit: SOC-SAT

THE Union representing Andalucian Farm Workers (SOC-SAT), in Almeria has announced that a strike of more than 50 workers at the greenhouses of the Godoy Group in the Campos de Nijar has been settled after a month.
Last Friday (September 27) the workers arrived at the Union HQ in San Isidro del Sindicato, approved the agreement reached with the company and terminated the strike.
The disagreement was about payment of the minimum wage and all of the workers who return to the farm will be paid this amount back dated to February of this year.
According to a union official this has been something of a soap opera with strikers and businessmen falling out, volunteers arriving from Germany to give the strikers their support, trade unionists arrested, removal of ‘guest workers’ and smuggling in of new workers in car boots.
The spokesman added that the affair “only lacked the arrival of the Virgin Mary to protect her children of the greenhouse!”
