A knife attacker injured two officers at the Paris police headquarters before being killed, officials have said.
The surrounding area, including the metro station at Cité, has been sealed off in a tight security operation.
Early reports are that one of the officers was seriously injured during the attack but Paris police had not made any comment at this stage.
French interior minister Christopher Castaner is heading to the scene.
