THERE is a long tradition of theatre in Mojacar, and now the municipality has a new amateur dramatics group.
The local Red Cross has launched ‘Teatro Senior Mojacar’, a theatre group exclusively for senior citizens.
The initiative, which has been warmly received, will be under the direction of Red Cross volunteer Antonio Casado, along with a member of the local Aquelarre Theatre Company.  Rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays at the village’s Centro de Usos Mutiples. Appropriate sketches, giving all the actors in the group the chance to participate, are currently being reviewed.
Mojacar’s Red Cross has for a long time carried out a broad range of very commendable work, offering help and support to any individual or group from all sectors of society. The wide spectrum of action includes visiting patients and checking up on children or families at risk of exclusion, as well as helping with clothing and providing meals.
It is however the elderly who are a central Red Cross concern as a particularly vulnerable sector. The volunteers set up programmes to prevent loneliness and isolation, while at the same time encouraging seniors to be active and feel useful.
Craft workshops, trips to places of interest like the Pulpi geode or the Almeria air raid shelters, painting exhibitions, WhatsApp groups, cookery competitions, attending informative talks such as those given by the police on safety or basic first-aid tips are just some of the activities on offer.
The Red Cross also hopes to now include more British senior residents, thanks to the two bilingual members.
The 18 Red Cross 18 local volunteers also provide support across Turre, Los Gallardos and Carboneras.
The Red Cross is the largest humanitarian organization in the world and of great importance in this region. Locally they finance their work through member contributions, donations, lottery tickets and the money collected from Red Cross Flag Day, which was held on October 1 in Mojacar’s Parque Comercial.
Local seniors and the President of the local Third Age Association assisted with the event’s fundraising.
