40-year-old Belgian Paralympian Marieke Vervoort has ended her own life through euthanasia.

Marieke won gold and silver at the London 2012 Paralympics, and two further medals at Rio 2016. During the build up to the Rio games Marieke had said the games were to be pinnacle of her life and afterwards she would consider euthanasia to save suffering with her muscle waisting condition.

Euthanasia is totally legal in Belgium and in 2008 Marieke signed papers which would at some stage allow a doctor to end her life.

At the build up to the Rio games which Marieke had described as her ” last wish” she said “You have to live day-by-day and enjoy the little moments. When the day comes – when I have more bad days than good days – I have my euthanasia papers. But the time is not there yet.”

Three years later, yesterday evening, Marieke decided it was the time for the very brave lady and top athelete to take her life choice to which she did.

May she rest in peace.
