A hunter has died after he was attacked by the deer he had just hunted down and shot, according to officials in Arkansas.

Thomas Alexander, 66, was hunting in Yellville, Arkansas on Tuesday when he stalked his prey, lined up his gun and shot a buck. As the hunter approached his trophy kill, thinking it was dead, it got up and attacked him.

“Evidently, it got up and attacked him and he was gored several times,” said a game park warder.

Alexander was able to telephone his wife, who then called emergency services. Emergency workers on arrival to the scene requested an air ambulance, but the hunter stopped breathing and had to be taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
